Industry: Telecommunications
Strategy: Quarterly Tech Debt Review
Opportunity
Over time, the Scrum teams within our telecommunications company had accrued significant technical debt. As a result, both maintenance and new implementations of the 3 main products began demanding increasing levels of effort. Processes that were once swift and efficient eventually slowed, as we faced the inevitable consequences of deferred improvements—a reality we had long anticipated.
Solution
To address this issue effectively, we begin by reviewing the tech debt tickets every 3 months in what we call the Quarterly Tech Debt Reviews. These meetings are product specific, where the relevant Product Owners, Architects and Engineers across the Scrum Teams are invited. The goal is to come up with Top 10 items.
Every Tech Debt ticket of that particular product was discussed individually in a collaborative session, where the scope was refined, and priorities were set based on impact and urgency. At the end, it resulted in a curated list of the top 10 technical debt items, ready to be included in the teams’ backlog refinement sessions, ensuring a clear and actionable approach to tackling these issues.
